This fall I have been busy checking growth, BP, vision and hearing on all our students at Taunton Forge. If you have not received a phone call or a written referral about a problem, your child was in the normal range for these screenings. I will also be checking the students who are 10 or older for scoliosis this spring.

This November the Medford Township Nurses trained an additional 32 district employees to perform CPR and use the defibrillator as outlined in the latest American Heart Association Guidelines. We have trained personnel in all of our schools to respond to medical emergencies, and administer an Epi-pen to students with a life threatening allergies if the nurse is not present. We are always working to make our schools a healthy and safe place for all of our students, their families and all of our staff members.

This spring I will be in the classrooms teaching our students how to stay healthy. Topics include germs and hand-washing, dental health, nutrition, and family life for our 5th graders. The annual Mother Daughter Tea will be scheduled in May for our 4th grade girls and their Mothers/Guardians.

If you have any questions about your child’s health, please feel free to contact me at ext 5240.

Keeping Taunton Forge Healthy

Now that winter has arrived, cold and flu season is in full swing.  We are asking for your help in controlling those inevitable infectious diseases. Imagine it’s a Monday morning, and your child tells you they are not feeling well. How do you decide when to keep your child home? Here are our district guidelines for when to keep your child home from school:

  • A fever of 100 degrees or above. Children must be fever free for 24 hours without Tylenol or Motrin to return to school.

Vomiting or diarrhea. Children need to be symptom free for 24 hours before   returning to school.

A persistent sore throat. Children with strep throat may return to school after they have been on antibiotics for 24 hours.

Red inflamed eyes with discharge. Seek medical attention.

A very runny nose or productive or persistent cough.

To help your family stay as healthy as possible we recommend:

  •           Frequent hand washing (please reinforce this at home)

  •           Covering noses or mouths when coughing or sneezing.

  •           Eight hours of sleep at night.

  •           Eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables

  •           Carrying tissues and chap stick

  •           Wearing hats and gloves. Students go out for recess except in rain or            extreme cold.

Please feel free to call me at extension 5240 if you have any questions. Thanks for being a “germ stopper.”
